Dedham Country & Polo Club - The Accidental but Singular Collaboration of Perhaps the Greatest Golf Architects of All-Time

Imagine Rembrandt, considered by some to be the greatest portrait artist of all-time, starting not with a blank canvas but with the Mona Lisa, the masterwork of DaVinci, perhaps the second greatest genius of this art form, and re-imagining it with his own deft, brilliant brushstrokes. Imagine.

The Dedham Country & Polo Club is a unique monument to the greatest classic golf course architects of all-time. Seth Raynor (12) and Donald Ross (11) have the design credit for 23 of Golf Magazine’s top 100. Ross designed Dedham’s 9-hole course in 1915.

A decade later, Raynor re-imagined his fellow genius’ original work and, with his own, deft strokes, produced an 18-hole masterpiece, the only Raynor design in Massachusetts. In the words of perhaps the greatest modern golf course designer, Ben Crenshaw (who, with Bill Coore have 6 top 100 credits): “I don’t think I’ve ever played a Seth Raynor course where I didn’t remember the features – immense bunkers, rolling greens, the distance and quality of the shots.”

Enjoy this hole by hole guide.  You’ll need it for your first round. Your memory will take over from there.

One of the most visually arresting opening holes in New England. Even big hitters must navigate a menacing angular stream and a parade of cross bunkers beyond them. Arnold Palmer’s introduction to Dedham was a solid three wood…. splashing into the first hole creek in the late 90’s!
